Mitra Chem is a Silicon Valley startup working at the intersection of machine learning and battery development. We live at the cutting-edge of battery technology and aim to deliver world-class materials for the EV market within the next few years. Our goal is to be the first lithium-ion battery materials manufacturer to shorten the lab-to-production timeline by >90% through accelerated R&D and vertically integrated process optimization. We will first focus on Li-ion battery cathodes, converting them from commodity chemicals into a product platform, customized for different applications. We are looking for an Acceleration Lead to build Mitra Chem’s core differentiator: a suite of force-multiplier tools that accelerate every unit operation from synthesis through powder-characterization and cell-prototyping and testing.


  • Lead a team of data scientists, computational scientists and software engineers to identify and alleviate mission-critical bottlenecks in the R&D workflow through new capability development combining software, automation, physics-based models and machine learning models.
  • Manage towards technical and product milestones on tight timelines and decide resource allocation across different product and infrastructure development efforts.
  • Continuously identify opportunities to accelerate existing workflows for materials synthesis, analytical characterization, cell fabrication and cell qualification.
  • Combine model-based and data-driven approaches to generate actionable insights from powder metrology, electrode preparation and cell-testing that can feedback into materials design and synthesis. Drive towards faster iteration timelines and more efficient resource utilization.
  • Propose, measure and track metrics for qualification speed-up.
  • Work towards the end goal of “productizing” the R&D infrastructure working alongside R&D scientists and engineers.


  • Substantial industry experience in a data science or software engineering role.
  • Masters/PhD in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or Physical Sciences.
  • Experience building and combining statistical methods, data-science models and physics-based models to inform and guide materials research and development.
  • Familiarity with materials chemistry, Li-ion cathode synthesis unit operations and battery electrochemistry strongly preferred.
  • Willingness to manage a technical team consisting of data scientists and software engineers.
  • Willingness to work with limited supervision.
