Mitra Chem is a Silicon Valley startup working at the intersection of machine learning and battery development. We live at the cutting-edge of battery technology and aim to deliver world-class materials for the EV market within the next few years. Our goal is to be the first lithium-ion battery materials manufacturer to shorten the lab-to-production timeline by >90% through accelerated R&D and vertically integrated process optimization. We will first focus on Li-ion battery cathodes, converting them from commodity chemicals into a product platform, customized for different applications. We are looking for Materials Scientists and Engineers to perform battery cathode R&D and manufacturing.

Description:

  • Design and follow experimental plans to explore novel cathode materials and process parameters
  • Develop new materials and processes in the synthesis design space
  • Analyze data using relevant and robust statistical methods and synthesize results and conclusions
  • Develop and test physical and data-driven models to prove out R&D-scale syntheses of cathodes.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with process engineers to ensure the processes developed are scalable and robust.
  • Operate equipment at a range of scales for all relevant processes including reaction, mixing, heating, milling and coating.
  • Use design of experiments and statistical process control to test various manufacturing methods and integrate that knowledge with R&D learnings.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree plus 2 yrs work experience or Master’s degree in chemical engineering, materials science, physics, chemistry, or equivalent field.
  • Experience with inorganic synthesis techniques including solid-state synthesis, high-temperature calcination, wet-chemical techniques (co-precipitation, sol-gel etc.)
  • Experience with materials characterization techniques including: XRD, BET, SEM, PSA, TGA.
  • Direct experience with battery cathode manufacturing in an industrial setting (precipitation, mixing, calcination) strongly preferred.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit, scrappiness and ability to interact with other functions in a cross-disciplinary environment.
  • Demonstrated interest or experience with statistical analysis, statistical process control and experimental design.
  • Optional Skills: Demonstrated interest in process modeling and simulation with Python or any commercial software, such as Aspen, MATLAB, Comsol and others.
